Don't believe everything...

 They're Kidding, Right?
Back to Full Blog

This sounded interesting so I read it. I'm not sure what to make of it.

By Stephen Adams, Telegraph News

"John Bolton, the former US ambassador to the United Nations, has escaped an attempted citizen’s arrest as he appeared at the Hay Festival.0528 15

Security guards blocked the path of columnist and activist George Monbiot, who tried to make the arrest as Mr Bolton left the stage.

The former ambassador - a key advisor to President George W Bush who argued strongly in favour of invading Iraq - had been giving a talk on international relations to more than 600 people at the literary festival.

Mr Monbiot was blocked by two heavily-built security guards at the end of the one-and-a-half hour appearance, before he could serve a “charge sheet” on him.

After being released by the guards the columnist - a fierce critic of the 2003 American-led invasion - made a dash through the rain-soaked tented village in a failed attempt to catch up with Mr Bolton."

A citizens arrest? Who are these people? They had a "charge sheet". They were just going to walk up to him, read the "charges" and then, what, he was just going to surrender himself to their custody? Were they planning on "taking him in" no matter what? Were they armed? Where would they have taken him, to some jail? In their basement? What? I actually would like to know what they expected would happen there (probably just what happened) and what they were hoping for. I'll post if I decide to dig and if I find anything more.

Citizens arrest.

sounds like when ashcroft or another bush boob went to france and had to flea because an activist filed international charges against him...they are all such similar liars and such it is hard for me to differentiate...

I would love to see all the Bush criminals have to answer for their actions, however I don't think it is likely to happen. I do know that trying to make a citizens arrest on charges of one's own devising isn't going to accomplish anything. Thanks for the comment.

The way I see the citizen's arrest thing is it is a legal way to do things. The reporter full of hope went up to arrest him and change the world. Possibly he was being a little or a lot naive--as in are the powers that be so corrupt down the line all following the chain of command so that a man trying to do a legal action a citizen's arrest has 2 chances of succeeded slim and none...the 60's brought change because of the numbers of people involved at a time when the media seemed comparatively honest---time to retool in my opinion.

I don't believe that someone can just decide to "citizens arrest" someone else based on charges that the first someone has drawn up himself, however valid they might be. A private citizen can make a citizen's arrest if he witnesses a crime and has opportunity to detain the perpetrator or if he comes upon a fugitive from justice. In either case he has a tall task in front of him. I don't believe the reporter mentioned in the post had any expectation of succeeding; I believe it was done for publicity and by itself has accomplished little, if anything.
