Don't believe everything...

 Whose War?
Back to Full Blog

Quoting from the book I most recently finished:

"By the time the general public realized the extent of the war, the depth and totality of it all, then the rationale in Washington would change, it would become Support of our boys out there. At first the critics were told that they should not be critics because it was not really going to be a war and it would be brief, anyway; then, when it became clear that it was a war, they were told not to be critics because it hurt our boys and helped the other side."

You know what the subject is here, right? Here's a little more:

"All of which would work for a while. Johnson had successfully co-opted the Congress and to a large degree the press."

Substitute the name Bush for Johnson in that passage and it sounds about right too, doesn't it? Although the press of the Vietnam era was absolutely tenacious compared to the bend-over boobs of today.

In any case, yes, the book was about the Vietnam era, "The Best and the Brightest", by David Halberstam. I recommend it. For GW especially.

Hi There, Talking of books I have been reading three interesting books, One I have mentioned before "The Global Superstorm" by Art Bell & Whitley Strieber. Have you read it yet?. This in my opinion is the most important, I quote from page 223: The Arctic is melting now (this was about 1998-9)and it would appear that it will only be a few more years extensive summer (it is about nine years) melt takes place and the condition favourable to a superstorm are present. Well according to a scientific report on the Internet, it will happen this summer, no more Ice in the artic. When is the world going to wake up?

The second book is "The New Pearl Harbor" by David Ray Griffin. Has any investigation been held yet, before the Bush leaves The Rose Garden, does anyone know?

The Third book is a work of fiction, or is it. "The Emperor of Ocean Park" by Stephen L. Carter, an Afro-American Law Professor, its one of the best books I've ever read, all 886 pages, have you read it yet. More Later Sincerely Mike Tenerife

Sounds like interesting reading Mike; no I haven't read any of them (or heard of them).

Currently I am reading a Psychology textbook, David Maraniss's "Rome, 1960, the Olympics That Changed the World", "Democracy Matters" by Cornel West, and an oral history of the Vietnam war, "Patriots" by Christian Appy.

Thanks for the recommendations and for commenting.

Notacynic,
That was an interesting quote on Vietnam. Funny how history sometimes repeats itself.

SkinnyGuy, it is funny (or something) how history seems to repeat. I had to keep reminding myself as I was reading that it was about the 1960s and not the 2000s.

The one central theme that seems to hold for both "wars" was the idea that "optimism" was/is an official "policy". Dissent not permitted. Or, another way, let's lie to ourselves and see how that works. Then be surprised when it doesn't.

I was disparaging? My apologies. What I meant to see was praise the lord and pass the ammunition! Nothing like a good holy war to unite us all. At least until we run out of "others" to hate.

Jail Bush!
